A Travellerspoint blog

and a week and a half left before flight.....

time continues to tick away as my departure moves closer and closer. I have begun my re-certification course for the scuba. The first lessons in the pool were chilling to say the least....came out feeling like a popsicle. Over the next day, developed a hugely nasty sinus cold.....so now what? well, buy a wet suit of course! the next lessons with the wetsuit, oh so much more comfortable. And an opportunity to remember what the pleasures of diving are all about. I have absolutely no anxiety of the various safety or precautionary skills that we practice, not like I remember them when I did it 30 years ago, I recall I was much more apprehensive back then. It was really an view back into my world of 30 years ago. A pretty cool feeling actually. But my mortality and responsiblity to the kids was another changed perspective (30 years adds A LOT of perspective), and the "real" danger of this sport......certainly emphasizes the need to be mindful at all times.

Otherwise I am pretty much ready to get on my way. Have a couple of things still to do but mostly, just grab my stuff and go. I am still wondering what I might do after all my currently planned stops, and have been thinking about Rainbow Beach, and Fraser Island. I'll look into that a little more and see from there.......

3 weeks to the day....

Hello again, and now....there are but three weeks left. Things are really starting to become sharp and clear. The plans have become more defined, and a greater sense of certainty has been the reward.Spent some time the other day picking up things like my bedroll, pack and other minor miscellaneous stuff. I also picked up another spare battery for my camera. The last one has lasted three years and thats pretty good I think. The original battery continues to plug along. I also picked another flash card....this one is 8GB. amazing ..... I believe that translates into 1000 hi-res photos .... wow .... this technology thing. can't ya just wonder what's goonnaa be the reality in another 50 years? So what's left to do? entry visa, medical insurance, load up the travel VISA - and some proper walking shoes and sandals/water shoes? thinking about maybe getting an electric shaver? decided that I will be taking my contact lenses - diving, swimming and everything just seems to make sense. got all the shirts, and shorts, and things like that. I'm feeling pretty ready....with three weeks to go? hmmmm....wonder if there is some excitment there?

A month to go.....

we are at exactly a month to go before leaving. It has been a pretty intense period of examination and exploring options. How much time do I have, what do I really want to do, and how might I best do that. I have settled on a couple of structured options, some sea kayaking, and a liveaboard reff dive (including some exotic places like Lizard Island, Cod Hole, Coral Sea, etc.). Thinking all I needed would be a refresher from a scuba certification, vintage 1977, I came to realize that the best thing to do was to get re-certified. So back to school I go, and I have my homework cut out for me. I also took my DSLR in for a tune up and cleaning. Its been three years almost, and that camera has been a lot of places, due for a cleaning for sure! I am also planning on spending some time on Magentic Island, a place called Nelly Bay, its offshore, Townsville, QSLD. After that, not sure exactly, but trying to keep things open and flexible. There are a lot of nature preserves, national parks, and other areas that could/would be all worth checking out. Only stuff left to get is my pack, bedroll, shoes/sandals, andextra memory cards for camera, insurance and travel visa. Got caught in some fine print on the ticketing arrangements, but I'll see about that still. All I care at the moment is to get there, feet on the ground, and the sunshine and clear minds forward.

April 2008

still planning.....

well it is now the middle of Februarty. The kids and I got back from our excursion to Florida and DisneyWorld, and I now will get seriouss about my trip to OZ. I have determined that a dive expedition and possibly a safari may be in the works. Lizard Island, and the Coral Sea seems like really really exciting opportunities. I have also looked into staying at a farm and hanging with that for a bit. So many different options. I am enjoying the planning, so far.....tales of time to come? This is goonna be GRAND!

February 1 2008

more planning.....

as we leap into the begining of February, the temperature is hovering in the low -20sC and a ton of snow everywhere. the avalanche season has taken its toll on many this year, and the frequency of serious accidents along the mountain park highways has been unusually high. skiing has been awesome, and I expect will continue well into May this year. My mind has wandered to the beaches and the sand and the excitment of Australia in two months!

I remain heavily focused on planning my dream adventure. I have taken the time to look into smaller centers of where I may be able to find peace, and relaxation. I have booked myself into the YHA in Sydney for four days immediately upon arrival to just chill and get oriented. From there, I am expecting that I will head north, and have identified a couple of different places leading all the way up to Townsville, Airlie Beach and Port Douglas. I am pretty unconcerned about my specific schedule or activities. This is a seek adventure, so off I will go.....
